♦ EMPIRE PICTURES. The large audience at the Empire last night thoroughly enjoyed Kalem's com-edy-drama, "The Girl and the Explorer." This romantic comedy of an explorer, who wished to finish the 'book of his travels undisturbed, assumed a false name; but it was discovered by a publisher's daughter in the guise of a housemaid. It is a succession of thrills and smiles. The Keystone comedy, "Leading Liz. Astray," is well up to Kcvstonc's high standard. The other films" shown •ire well worth seeing. ROYAL PICTURES. At the matinee to-morrow, and in the evening, the management will present Mr. Charles Chaplin in "His Prehistoric Past." This Keystone star feature is the „ quintessence of absurdity, and Charles Chaplin defies one to stop laughing. The programme will include the nintli series of "Dolly of the Dailies," and the great Lubin drama, "A Single Act," besides several other films of an entertaining nature. HUGARD THE MAGICIAN. Once again New Plymouth is to be visited by the magician, Mr. Jean Hugard. It is some two years ago that Hugard appeared in New' Plymouth. He comes with a new show full of novelties, illustions, and clever artists. Miss Myra Errington is responsible for a fine musical act. She. plays latest catch v and patriotic music on different kinds of instruments, including the xylophone and musical spinning discs. 'Another novel act is that presented by Cliva'li the .Juggler and his dog Sport'. It consists of some clever balancing and juggling. The dog is exceedingly well trained. Miss Millie Clare is the comedienne , of the combination . Both Hugard and his Chinese colleague, Cliiiig Sung Loo, present their acts on a lavish scale. The company open at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday, June l(i. The box plan opens at Hoffmann's next Monday.
