TARANAKI PRESBYTERY.

QUARTERLY MEETING. The Taranaki Presbytery met at Hawoa on June 3 and 4. Iler. Mr. Shore presided. Bible Class Rally.—The Presbytery passed a resolution expressing gratification at tho progress of Bible class work in the Dominion and especially in Taranaki, and made speical reference to the fact that many 'Bible class members had joined the expeditionary forces. iMr. Pattison reported on the excellent character of the home missionaries' sermons.

Visitation of Warerley.—An excellent report was given by tho Visitation Committee of the spiritual and financial condition of this important charge, of which Mr. Mclvor was the minister. Good and progressive work was being done by every department of the church. Special mention was made of the fact that a now Sunday school hall ( £&42| and a new manse ( £O4ll had been cleared of all but £2O in three years. As chaplaincaptain, Mr. Mclvor had efficiently represented the church in the recent territorial camp. A suitable finding was adopted, and Mr. Ireland waa asked to r«ad it to tho Waverley congregation. In connection with the camp report by the chaplain, a resolution was passed thanking 'Mr. Mclvor and his congregation for their work and generosity, and arranging that the various charges through the bounds should take up a collection to go to a marquee fund. The Presbytery had decided at a former meeting that it was necessary to procure one for its own use. Tho marquees were well patronised by territorials in their leisure hours.

Evangelist.—lt was agreed that Mr. Howes bo asked to make enquiries about securing the services of a suitable evangelist.

Mr. Welsh was appointed corresponding, member of the Assembly's Sabbath Observance Committee, with instructions to work up the Lord's Day Alliance. Normanby.—JMr. Shore read an extract minute from this congregation asking to be declared a home mission station.—. Granted.

Mokoia - Whakamara.—After a long discussion, it was agreed to detach this from Normanby and place it under the care of the Hawera session, Mr. Butler to have permission to conduct his weeknight service as long as he pleased. Mr. MoKenzie, B.C. travelling secretary, was cordially welcomed by tho moderator,' 'Mr. Shore, and briefly addressed the Presbytery.

Student volunteers. —It was agreed to urge upon the Foreign Mission Committee the advisability of going forward and doing all in the Presbytery's power to support it. Sinco an increase of 14 per member over the total mcmb*r«ikip of 41,080 would give an increase M .£2054, it 'was agreed to suggest to the Foreign Mission Committee the desirability of circularising church members. Sympathy.—The Pre.ibytery passed a motion expressing sincere sympathy with members of congregations' whose relatives had been wounded, are missing, or have died at the front. A special message was sent to Rev. F. Rule, a 1 former member of the (Presbytery, whose son had recently died of wounds.

iPatriotic Temperance Crusade. —Tt was agreed to ask ministers and missionaries to set apart the second Sabbath in July for the purpose of advocating this desirable measure, -which the Presbytery heartily commended. , Minister's'modo of conveyance.—During a discussion, one minister remarked that it was time congregations recognised that this ought not to 'be a burden upon the minister or missionary, but a part of the working expenses of the church. In any other calling, allowance would be made in some way for these "travelling expenses." It was a mistake for a congregation to tlilnfc It w«» doing well when it paid a minister £2OO or £250 and allow him to carry all the burden of protiding and maintaining a horse and gig or motor to do the necessary traTelling.
