A cable, message received to-day by the Prime Minister conveys the news of the death in the Dardanelles of Lieutenant Oscar Freyberg, eldest son of the late Mr. James Freyberg, of Wellington, Hr.d brother to Lieutenant-Commander Bernard Freyberg, who was last week included in the Distinguished Service Orders.

Deceased, who was 34 years of- age and unmarried, was born at Kensington, London, and arrived in Wellington with bis parents in 1801. He was for some time a law clerk here, but was engaged in journalism before he left for London Vi October to enlist. Previous information was that Lieutenant Freyberg had been in charge of a section of trawlers engaged in mine-sweeping operations in tbe North Sea, when he had tbe experience of being blown up no less than three times in the boats under him. He was promoted, and went to the Dardanelles, whence comes news of his death.

Lieutenant Freyberg was a prominent yachtsman, and recently vice-commander of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club. He ■was known throughout New Zealand as a verv successful competitor in that form of sport, and was also at one time well known in swimming circles. (About six years ago Lieutenant Frevberg was a member of tho legal staff of Messrs Roy and Nicholson, of New Plymouth, and took an active interest in all matters connected with acquatics.)
