REPORTS OF GERMAX CRUELTY.

Petrograd, June (i.

The Germans earlier in the war used vitriol, which they squirted into the trenches. Later tliey used bombs containing concentrate;! formalin, icausing much eye trouble over large areas. These methods were, apparently, unsatisifaetory, x so they adopted gas, but applied it differently from the western method. On the Galieian front they ignited ' large, quantities of straw before, their trenches into which objects resembling sh.ort lengths of rope were thrown, changing the smoke to flames. The enemy were next observed trying to extinguish the flames with, hoses, but failed. The enemy climbed out of the trenches and ran for their lives. Russian rille (ire meanwhile decimated the refugees. At other points the Germans threw tins, like biscuit boxes, which burst on impact, emitting dense poisonous fumes.

There is a revolting story of the treatment of a party of Russian prisoners in Poland. They were locked up without food for several days until on the verge of starvation, ami then turned into a, Vourtyard, where -jeering officers threw them 'hits of bread. While the staggering wretches were searching for fragments a einematogfapher photographed the scene. ,
