WAITARA NEWS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council took place on Wednesday evening last. Present: His Worship the (Mayor, Crs. Spurdle, Brabant, Blanchard and Tucker, also the two newlyelected mefttbers, Crs. Anna and Johns, who made the usual declaration and took their seats. Miss 'Stathaim wrote in reference to the approaching completion of the obelisk for the old (soldiers' cemetery, and the. date for the unveiling.—lt was decided tfliart the function take place on June 24.

Dr. Valintinc wrote thanking his Worship for his courtesy shown to him in his recent visit to Waita'ra, and pointing out the necessity of a drainage scheme, and that he would be glad to hear what the Council propose doing in the matter, also pointing out thnt it is very essential to the public health of the. citizens of Waitara. The Department strongly urged the Council to seriously consider the matter.—lt was decided to hold a special meeting to deal with the question.

The Hon. James Allen wrote stating that owing to pressure of business he would be unable to attend the unveiling of the obelisk. —It was decided that Mr. Okey, M.P., <be asked to perform tho ceremony.

The foreman's report was read and adoptcd.l Air. C. K. Worthington wrote stating that he intended cutting up his property and wanted to know what the Council required him to do by way of access to the property.—lt was decided to inform Mr. Worthiiigton that the by-laws fully explained the position. The following committees were appointed:—Works, Lighting and Water: Crs. Brabant Arms, Wakeley and Bknchard; Reserves, Leases and "Recreation: Crs. Spurdle, Tucker and JoTTus; Cemetery, Crs. Anns and Johns; Library, Crs.. Spurdle, Johns and Brabant; Finance, the whole Council.

A«counts amounting to £149 3s Rd were piisscd for payment.

The supporters of both candidates are leaving no stone unturned to win the seat; and during the next week the public will liaivc the pleasure of hearing tho Hon. W. F. Massey, who i 9 to speak in the Clifton Hall on Wednesday evening next. IWe ha"d the pleasure of hearing (Sir. G. W. Russell last week, and it is on the cards that Sir Joseph Ward is to speak in Waitara Before the election.

TJie Waitara Municipal Brass Band gave their first municipal open-air concert in McLean street on Saturday even ing last under the conductorship of Mr. T. H. Hughes. The Waitara Fire Brigade's annual ball took place in the Clifton Hall on Thursday evening last, and was largely attended. The 'music was supplied by Miss Carr (piano), Mr. Smith (cornet), and Mr. Murhoyd (violin). Firemen Spurdle and Redmond acted as M.C.'s.
