Mr. Thomas Cawthom, the j wellknown philanthropist, of Nelson has just celebrated liia 82ml birthday. .Mr. Leo. MadG rbbon, a resident of the Core district and a member of t'lie firm of MafiGilUbon and 00., merchants, at Gore, for the last thirty-six years, died on Thursday night, aged 01. At the St. Aubyn Methodist Sunday School yesterday afternoon the Rov. Win. Cannell presented Miss Helen White, on behalf of the school, with a handsome gold medal suitably inscribed, in recognition of her twelve years' unbroken attendance at school.
A man named William Oliver was fined £2O at Taumarumii for stealing money from a boarding house at O'.vhango. Various sums were taken from the rooms of the boarders. He had previously received accommodation at the establishment, and suspicion falling upon him after he left the township, part of tiie missing money was found in a room he occupied at an hotel in Taumaruunui.
