June 5, 7 —A.R.C. Great Northern. June IS, 111—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. July 28—Waimatc Plains T.C. Annual. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.'.') Steeplechase day at Ellerslie, Concluding day at Wingatui (Dunedin). Birkful did not start at Ellerslie on Thursday.
The heavy going upset the top-weights at Auckland.
Katua fell in the Taihoa Steeple at Otaki. *
B. Deeley rode Multiply and Veronal to victory on Thursday. El Oallo's Northern win shows what chance the Hawera hacks had with him. On his form in the Hurdles on Thursday, Morecambe should be a hot order for the big steeples. Fortify was well supported in the Flying at Otaki, but was well beaten by the dividend-payers. Tirohanga and Royal Arms were nicely weighted for to-day's engagements, and should run well.
Powder Fox was left at the post, and took no part in the Rahui Handicap at Otaki the first day. Welcome Nugget started at anv old price in the Maiden, and was not sighted at any part of the journey. The public made IJaumakaka (Deeley) a hot order in the 'Otaki Handicap, but Tangihou had the favorite beaten at the turn, and just strolled home. Owing to the serioiis illness of Mr. J. H. Pollock, Otaki weights v.ere declared by Mr. 11. Coyle, and Manawatu Trot handicaps by Mr. M. Shannon,
Moutoa Girl was very lame after contesting the Raukawa Gup on Thursday, Multiply is said to jump fences splendidly, and Trainer 0. Jones may have his eye 011 the Grand National. Glacier was a better favorite than Boon in the Otaki Welter, but was never dangerous. His Eminence came with a wet sail in the last furlong, and was followed home- by a rank outsider in Ruatangata. The failure of Corrie, Royal Arms, and Black Northern in the big hurdles at Ellcrslie came as a blow to punters, but a good light-weight like El Gallo held a big advantage in the heavy going. Tragedy King's form was also good. Colonel Soult has cost his party a nice sum of money in the past, but they were confident on Thursday, and duly landed the Cornwall Handicap. He is some good. The Raukawa Cup was an interesting race. From an even start Peroneal was in the front, George, Goldstreani, and Ine'uru just, ahead of a bunched field. Along the back straight Ineuru had a length lead, which she held until entering the straight. At this stage Byron, Multiply, and Lady Louisa's colors were showing out very prominently. At the distance Ijady Louisa headed Ineuru, but Multiply put in a claim and won by a length: a length and a liaif between second and third.
There was a nag at Otaki staggering along under the name of Mahzoltov. Being by Formative—Awapuhi, a nuHi simpler name might have been concocted. Vpronal (Heeley) had ail easy win in the Rahui Handicap. She was in front at the end of a furlong, and was never afterwards headed, winning easily by two lengths from Wild Lupin, who beat Altcar by a similar distance. Gold Soult shaped badly.
