CARNIVAL AT WELLINGTON.

Wellington, Last Night. 10-<lay 'witnessed the official opening by the Governor (Lord Liverpool) of a carnival oiTgunised by the citizens in aid! of the fund for wounded soldiers and sailors and tiie dependents of those who majt fall at the front. Many willing committees had put in weeks of labor on various sections of the programme, and the result was tliat when tho procession traversed the city streets this forenoon it afforded a. spectacle never before wit- { nessed in the capital city. The procaw sion was quite two miles long, and included many attractive displays by trades and other organisations, as well as representatives of various candidates for the honor of election to tine position of queen of the carnival.

Children formed a prominent featuro in the procession, and there was a creditable representation of a battleship Ibuijjt upon a lorry; also a display of ambulance work by nurses and soldiers. The school children's parade was organised by the Labor Department and made a fine picture.

Record crowds lined all the thorough* fares, and Newtown Park which was tiha .point for "which the procession, probably never contained no many people before.

After the Governor liad officially declared the carnival open, sports lield on the green, and many stalls fol! the sale of all kinds of articles were placed about the grounds and did good business. Altogether the whole of the carnival arrangements reflected great credit on the organisers, and it is anticii pated that the result will be a very! large addition to the funds. The camH val continues for the next four weeks.
