THE CASUALTY LISTS.
KILLED IN ACTION. ,vj
LIST STILL TO COME TO H^ND.
By Telegraph.-—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. The delay m the issue of complete casualty lists is causing complaint in many quarters, but it is not easy to set that the authorities here could do mor« than they are doing already. The Minister of Defence has made repeated requests for additional information, and lias been assured by the men on th# spot that all the details available ars being transmitted to the Dominion. Communication between the base at Alexandria and the scene of the fighting on the Dardanelles is very bad, and th« cablegrams have made 'it, sufficiently clear that the officers at the front ar# very busy men indeed. The chief caus# for anxiety locally is the evident disparity between the number of men reported wounded and the number contained in the lists of killed and missing. Unless the New Zealanders have.been extraordinarily fortunate—and there is no reason to believe they have been—the lists of wounded and missing are very much in arrears. A recent cablegram to th« Minister of Defence from the officer commanding the New Zealand baso made incidental reference to the statements of Turkish prisoners that New Zealand wounded and prisoners were being wall treated by the enemy, and were being, removed to Constantinople. This statement threw some light upon the missing portions of the casualty lists. The defence authorities make no secret of their belief that a long list of men killed in action has still to come to hand.
