SPORTING.

TURF TOPICS. (By Moturoa.) There will be racing at Ellerslie Otaki and Wingatui this afternoon, the opening days of the Great-Northern, Otaki and Dunedin winter meetings respectively. Upwards of twenty Taranaki horse* j have been sent north to race at Ellerslie, and a considerable number will be operating at Otaki; so much local interest centres upon those two picnic grounds. ' The chief event at Ellerslie to-day is the Great Northern Hurdle race run over ten hurdles on a two miles and a half course. The race carries with it 1250 sovs, out of which the second horse takes £250 and the third horse £IOO It is a race worth winning, or even gaming a place in. Consequently, the field is representative of the Dominion's best hurdlers. The fifteen engaged are a good lot. There is not a had one in the crowd, as is shown by the fact that two of the horses thrown in at the minimum, EI Gallo and Queen's Post,, are as well fancied as anything m the race, and Hereford, Tragedy King, Black Northern, Royal Arms, Mo,!cam.be, Corrie, Styrax and Immensity all have good following,,. The race never looked more open. Two miles and a half will find some of the Great Northern candidates going up and down in the same place at the finish, and the public will do well to pick out the stayers. These appear to include Mack Northern, Corrie and Sly-' rax and if the former is caught in the galloping mood he may be hard to beat I The 'Maiden Steeple lias drawn a f;iilield, but the class is not partienVlv pood. Ecccnt form sorts out General Webb and Dogger flank as horses likely to get round safely. Thirty-five are engaged in the Jorvois Handicap, and the public will be set a great task to pick the winner. Jung Chmra can go fast, and Doncastcr iNicomar, Stepnipaul and ethers have shown considerable sped on the trieici lately. Birkful tops the list in a poor field in the Maiden Hurdles. Mon Atliol, Harbor Light and Kaimanuka are ail fencing well, but the top weight must make a good showing. Fourteen have been paid up for in the Cornwall Handicap, including several hign-class ten-fourlong performers. Colonel Soult has pleased most on the tracks, but Tinopai and Emperador, who I were both unlucky at Wanganui, may also show up at the finish. The Hunt Club Hurdles looks like a case of picking them out of the hat, but Takanini may be the favorite at the end. To-day's racing concludes with the Members' Handicap, and twenty-throe remain in the five-furlong race. Quickbeginners like Tatterley, Bimeter and Olenroy should flatter their supporters. The Tyson party will be waiting at the window to collect, but the race has to be won yet. Tyson will have to be at his best to "live" with Tattcrloy and Co. The Ruakawa Cup, the principal event at Otaki to-day, will bring some fair horses together, and a good race is certain. Lady Louisa, Multiply, Maniaroa, George and Allen Doone are most discussed, but Multiply and Maniaroa should be particularly improved after their Wanganui showing. Bold Stroke, Fortify, Soporific, Gold Soult and Sir Fisher should run well in minor events at the meeting. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, June 2.
