EMPIRE THEATRE. A welMilled house greeted the. new programme at the Empire Theatre lastnight. Chief amongst the new attractions was an Edison drama, " The Best Man." Shortly before sailing for .America from Europe, George Hayne hail sent Cecilia Jefferson, his fiancee, the reassuring word that by marrying her he would save her family from financial extremity. The plot is a complicated one, involving many startling situations. Havne is imprisoned in his dressingchamber on the morning of his wedding, and a man named Holmar, a financial adventurer, managers to secure an important secret cypher service message. A friend of Hayne's named Gordon endeavors to secure the message, and in doing so actually marries Hayne's fiancee. After several startling adventures, in which Hayne's friend manages to secure the document he is seeking, the couple reach New York. Hayne meantime is looked upon as an impostor by the .lefl'ersons and their friends. Gordon and his wife proceed to 'Washington, where for his clever bit of work lie is appointed ehief of the foreign secret service bureau. This good news, and a rapidly acquired love for Gordon, bring full content to Cecilia. ''Tile Man Who Knew," a Vitagraph drama, is another strong picture. Its story is one of absorbing interest, dealing with the temptations of a young girl who has a sick mother. Other pictures are a side-splitting Keystone comedy, ''Noise of Bombs," featuring "Fatty" Ai'lmckle and Mabel Normand; Pathe Gazette, "Sugar Industry," "The Lure of the Green Table" (Lubin drama), and "Ham, the Iceman" (Kalcm comedy).
