POTENTIAL SOLDIERS.
100,000 XOT ENLISTED. STATISTICS OK !K>MIXIOX'S SfXril.E -MICX. Jii .these days of recruiting, when eoui--1 ulsory service is spoken of occasionally us a possibility, it is interesting to cast an eye over the progress of recruiting to ilute. and apply to our future requirements an analysis of what lets already beer, dour, says the Wellington Dominion. A few days ago" it was stated that 10,00;) men are required liy tlie middle of December, and ullljil between 'December 12 and April 10. Since Ang'.ut Xi'iv Zealand has raised 25.H01! men, which is at the rate of 2580 men per month. At that rate Xew Zealand will in the six months (from I t'ie middle of .Tune to the middle of December) secure 1.1.-180 men, and from tlie middle of December to the middle or April will enrol 10,320 men. This rate would produce an aggregate for the two periods of 25.800 men, whereas only 15.000 are said to be required. Details of the forces we have raised during the last"ten months are:— First Sanioan Force 2000 Main Body ROOO First Reinforcements 800 Second Reinforcements 2000 Third Reinforcements 1800 ■Samoan Relief Force ">OO l'on'tli Reinforcements 2200 Fifth Reinforcements .. (say) 2000 Sixth Reinforcements . (say) 2000 Extra Force ■ 2500 Seventh Reinforcements (say) 2000 N.Z. total in ten months .. 25,500 The men of military age (between 20 years and 41) years) in the Dominion number about 105,000. When the l'.lll census was taken the figures were: 'Between 20 anil 25 40,f1!12 Between 25 and lit) 54,1i!U Between SO and .'is 40,410 Between &j and 40 .'!'.),45S Total 1!i:5,254.. 'When the age limit is lowered, men between eighteen and twenty years will be brought with in the term " military age." Their numbers will increase the total by about 22.000, The men between forty years and forty-ffv<! years number about 28,000. So, if New Zealand ordered out all its men who are between eighteen and forty-five years of age, her armv would total nearly 245,000 men. Deducting unfits, the ranks would certainly include over 200.000 men. Supposing all the fit men lietween the years of eighteen and forty-live were filled up, there would he in addition to i':c unfits abont 82.000 men left to carry on the industries of the country. The . details are:— % 'J 'Between 15 ami IS 22,000 1| lietween 45 and 50 2!.00l) 1 'lietween 50 and 55 20.(100 'lietween 55 and tiO i(i,000 Total 82,(100 ' As there has been some controversy on the subject of the duty of married men in regard to the recruiting cam- , paign, it should be helpful to state the numbers of single men of military age win) call Xew Zealand their country. Id 1011 there were 150,00!) unmarried men, of twenty years and over. The statistics show that 110.000 of these were between twenty and forty years - of age* Almost tlie whole of the 18,000 r men between eighteen and twenty are single, which brings the total of umnar- ) ried men up to 128,000. So far we have t raised 25,800 men, and allowing that 1 22,000 of these are single there yet r.e- .. main in Xew Zealand 100,000 single men . of military age. After considering the numbers of single men. it is informative to ascer--2 tain how many married men have no s children in their families. These men . number, roughly, 30,000.
