THE TRAMWAYS.

VERY GOOD PROGRESS MADE. The work in connection with the installation of the tramways in Xew Ply- ( mouth is proceeding apace. In conversation with a News representative on Saturday the engineer (Mr. Barclay) stated that the car shed is practically finished and the track for the entrance to the shed is now being- put down. The formation of the main line is now almost complete fronv Bailey Road to Cutficld Road. In this connection several 'big Knolis are being removed, which wilt be a very great improvement, lessening the grade considerably. The tractc should be formed as far as the railway station in about a fortnight's time. Bo- ' tween 40 and 50 men are employed on the work, which is not being retarded 1 to any great degree by the wet weather, ' only one day being lost since the work was commenced. "The whole work is | very satisfactory," declared Mr. Bar- ! clay, "and is progressing quite as well as was expected." 1 The Borough Engineer (Mr. Skitrop) was questioned as to the probable con- [ dition of the- roads during the coming 1 winter in view of the work connected with the trams. T'.ic engineer remarked that the roads would inevitably become badly cut Tip with the carting of heavy loads of metal, but they were following as closely as possible on ,the completion of the laying of the tramlines, and already 35 chains had been formed on one side of the completed track. Twenty chains of this had been soltarred. The work would have proceeded faster, however, but for the bad weather, which delay,ed it. Another cause of delay had been the difficulty of procuring horse teams, which were very scarce locally, all being at present employed in connection with the trams.
