The public is reminded of the benefit to be given in the Empire Picture Palace by the management to-morrow evening in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund., At the meeting- of the Taranaki Land Board yesterday, a resolution was passed, recommending the Government to remit the rent of Crown tenants absent on military swvice during such absence from New Zealand on active service. The benefit picture 'performance in aid the Hospital Ship Fund which was held at Bernard's Theatre, Stratford, on Tuesday realised the sum of £BO 103.

Wilson, has received permission from the Minister for Internal Affairs to conduct the rafl'le. Tickets, (id each may be obtained at Miss Hamerton'a Fancy Depot in Devon Street. i The war levy decided upon by the suppliers of the Mangatoki Dairy' Company at its last annual meeting has resulted in the accumulation of the very satisfactory sum of approximately £'27o. It was decided to hold this fund until a later date, when a meeting would be called to discuss the disposal of the fund. Mr. ,J. Marx, chairman of the company, stated on Tuesday evening that its allocation would he decided upon shortly. A deputation from the Spottswood district, consisting of Messrs. D. J; Hughes, Roulston, Williamson and Warren, waited on the New 'Plymouth post master yesterday, asking 'for an improved mail service to Rpottswood. In reply, the post master stilted that whim the South Road was in a condition to allow of it a motor-car would be put on this service, which would, in all probability, meet the requirements of the people of the district.

Clark, W.'li. Bracegirdle, B. Y. Cottier and R. S. Bell (Lcpperton). Another contingent will leave Tnglewood on June 11. Since May 1 the recruiting officer, Lieutenant Humphrey, has enrolled forty-one volunteers and of these forty have passed the doctor. The head master of the Central School (Mr. Denipsey) waited on the Taranaki Education Board at yesterday's meetin" and, oil behalf of the lady teachers, suggested that the three local schools— Central, West Knd and Fitzrov—should drop tne usual sewing syllabus and do knitting sewing, etc., in aid of the hospital ship and wounded soldiers generally. This was being done in Duncdin. Inspectors Ballai'ityne and Whettcr supported the idea, which, they stated, was already being carried out in many schools. Air. Masters also strongly supported it. He believed that "it was already being done in Stratford. Mr. A. Morton moved that the board heartily approve of the suggest,ujn that the town schools and any 'others desiring to do so should be permitted to suspend the ordinary sewing work of the syllabus in order that the pupils may assist in the preparation of ai'ti'des for the use of the expeditionary forces. Mr. -Masters seconded the motion, and it was carried. In this connection, it was also decided to request tlie Education Department to suspend the present sewing syllabus i n order to allow of this being done.
