NOTES ON THE RACING, (Special to News.) Wanganui, Last Night. Racing commenced with the Winter Oats Handicap, l'lay Off, Hoy, and Veroneal carrying the bulk of the tote investments. (irattan and Veronra] made the pace to the bend, where Hoy came through and fought out a good finish with Veroneal, the former winning hy a neck. King'Chiara finished fast, just beating Play Off for third money. Client _ was a very hot order in the Balgownie Hack Handicap, and Salvia and Gallupin were the only others seriously backed. Gallupin led Chaminade and Draft in the early stages, hut Draft led into the straight. Vladian, Salvia, and Client put in their claims, and a great finish saw Client squeeze home from 'Salvia with Vladian and Draft close up. Vestal was withdrawn, leaving ten runners in the Grandstand Steeple. 'l,'iia Pole, Daylight Hill, and Soporific were evenly supported. Soporific went to the front in the first furlong, and was never headed, winning easily from The Pole and The Diver. Daylight Bill fell at the second brush double the first time passing the stand, and Sportsman fell over him., Nita was fourth and Adlnought and Bonny next.
Jolio Fille carried most money in the Rata Hack Hurdles, St. Gate, First Consul, and Snowraker being scratched. Vascular and Epworth led to the stand. Epworth falling and interfering with Ngapoto. General Webb took the lead four furlongs from home, but Awahou caught liini at the last jump and won very easily. Jolie Fille was a close third, and Doon fourth.
All started in the May Hurdles, Black Northern being a better favorite than Corrie. St. Gate and Aratiatia led for moat of the distance, but Corrie easily settled tlie opposition in the straight, winning by two and a half lengths from Black Northern in slow time. Black Northern galloped unkindly. Play Off was the only scratching in the l'.mpjre Handicap, twelve going to the post. Emperador and Baiiksia were bracketed, and carried most of the coin. George led Banksia and Peroneal passing the stand, but Emperador assumed the lead along the back. Lady Louisa headed him three furlongs from home, and came into the straight several lengths in front of Maniaroa, Empera- 1 dor, and George. Emperador could not go on with it, but the other pair gained quickly on Lady Louisa, who just lasted long enough to beat George by a head. Mnniaroa was a close third, and Emperador fourth.
Fortify was produced in the Farewell Handicap, and the public rushed the Hawera horse. Calais also carried much boodle. Gallupin made the early running, Fortify showed great pace, and, leading into the straight, came right away, and won easily from Calais, who beat Boldstroke for second money.
