They considered his demeanour suspicious, and asked him where he was going and what he was doing. He was a well built man, and ho answered calmlv enough that he was "out for a walk." Thereupon they asked him to walk to the bottom of the road with them, aa ayoung lady had been assaulted, and if she declared him not to be her assailant they would harbor no'further suspicions concerning him. While this conversation was in progress each held an arm of their man. He cheerfully expressed his willingness to accede, and thejj released their hold. To their astonishment, the man then whipped out n revolver, and told them to approach him again at th» risk of their lives. Without much ado he dashed off, and eluded all pursuers.
