On the Sea.
A NAVAL BATTLE. RUSSIANS AND GERMANS ENGAGED. REPORTED CAPTURE OF RIGA. Received May 22, 12.50 a.m. Copenhagen, May 21. There are rumors in Sweden of a great naval battle between German and Russian vessels in connection with the German landing at Riga. It is also rumored that the Germans captured Riga.
GERMANY LOSES 17 SUBMARINES. ANOTHER TRAWLER SUNK. Copenhagen, May 20. It is reported in Herman naval circles that Germany has lost seventeen submarines since February| 18. Captain Weddingen's loss has greatly depressed the crews of other submarines. London, May 20. The steamer Dumcree was sunk l>v a submarine off the Cornwall coast. The crew was saved. A submarine blew tip the trawler Chrysolite off Kinaird Head. The crew were picked up hy a passing steamer. ■Lord Mersey opened the Falaba inquiry. The Solicitor-General emphasised the shameful crime of sinking an unarmed and unoffending passengur ship, LOSSES BY SUBMARINES. London, May 20. . 'During the weet ended May li> there were 1438 arrivals and departures and two vessels, whose tonnage totalled 5173 tons, and four fishing vessels were sunlc by submarines. AMERICAN STEAMER ATTACKED. Received May. 21, 8.30 p.m. New York, May .21. The oil-tank steamer Gushing has arrived. The captain reports that a 'German aeroplane dropped three fbombs, and made a deliberate attempt to sink the vessel in order to murder the crew. FRENCH STEAMER SUNK. Received Mav 22, 12.50 am. London, May 21. The French trawler .Tuse was torpedoed oil' Dartmouth. Thirteen of the crew perished.
