BELGIAN RELIEF FUND.
OMATA'S FIXE EFFORT. Residents of Omata have every cause to congratulate themselves on the successful issue of their efforts in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, for, judging by the returns already to hand lieu yesterday's function, and these" are by »io means complete, the result should be, to add nearly £204 to the fund. This is very creditable indeed to a district which was very limited in scope, vnly including the territory between Bpotswood and Tapuae. The function took the nature of a small fair in the Omata Hall and a gift sale. A committee comprising Mesdamcs Cleaiow, Hooker, Penwarden, Moore, Messrs.. Clcmow, Hughes, Crockett, Meyenbcrg and IJoneylicld had systematically and thoroughly canvassed the whole district, and , met a ready and willing response, not having one refusal. The donations in cash and kind made a goodly showing, the former alone amounting to! over fii'i), whilst the latter comprised 'stock of every description—poultry and pets galore, dairy produce, garden produce, home industries, furniture, etc.; in! fact, almost any article that one could mention. There was a good attendance in the hall in the afternoon, mid 3ie or die was indeed hard-hearted that could escape with pocket unscathed from the attacks of the winsome maidens; with the patriotic badges, button-holes, guesSing competitions or other effective methods of securing the nimble threepcflnypiccc—and no one wanted to, for all recognised that it was for a good tause. Thi! more sedate stallholders were kept busy and all looked happy—sure sign that they were doing a good business. The stallholders were: Afternoon tea, Mesdamcs Penwarden, Moore, Were, Misses Penwarden, S. Pen Warden, ■Wells and C. Moore; sweets, Mrs Clommv and Misses Ona Penwarden, M. Rayly and .Jessie Olemow; variety stall. Mrs Hooker: competitions, Mrs Kidd and Miss I. Vickers; produce, Mesdamcs A. Mace, A. S. Frost and Kyngdon; sheep guessing, Mr. P. Mace, Among the items to be guessed for ■were a model town made by Keith Clemow; a picture, Miss Wells; boat, Mr. Frost; cushions, talile-centres, etc. Miss Hope Aahcr did well with the sale of button-holes, realising 13s Od; whilst little patriotic flags, hand painted by Mrs Mevenberg, . who was assisted in their salo.liy Miss Blewman, realised :C1 fis. In all, about £2O was taken at the various stalls. but'there is a lot of competition money yet to count. The committee, which comprised Mesdamcs Clemow, Hooker. Moore, Penwarden, Kidd, Messrs. Rayly, Hooker, iPenwarden, Vickers. Hughes, Crockett, afoore, Olemow, Shrimpton, and Meyenherg, with Mr. D. Hooker as chairman, kept an eye to everything, / whilst the secretary, Mr. Meyenbcrg, had his work right 'up to the moment, every detail hehig foreseen and arranged.
THE SALE. The sale produced some spirited bidding. Mi - . Fairbrotlujr was in his best form, and .kept mutters merrily moving, Whilst Mr. R. Cutfleld wis kept very busy booking up, and had an equally busy time afterwards making dut accounts, for a feature was the prompt and willing payment. It was impossible to obtain a complete list of the donors of the goods, as miicli was sent 'anonymously, but the principal items submitted were: — '
