SPORTING.

wanganui notes. (By "Moturoa.") Tlio Wanganui Jockey's Chili's winter meeting opens to-d:iy, and will be c;;u eluded on Saturday. The principal events to be decided' this afternoon are the Wanganui Steeplechase (three miles), Century Hurdle Hace (two miles and a quarter), and Connolly Handicap (one mile and a quarter). Satisfactory acceptances have been received, and, as the weather promises to be perfect, a fine meeting should eventuate. Already a big crowd of visitors from Auckland, J Hawke's Hay, Wellington, and the South , have put in an appearance at Wangaltui, and the attendance should be very large. Special reports of (he racing will appear in the .News on Friday, Saturday, and Monday mornings. To-day's racing will commence at noon with the Borough Handicap (six furlongs). Fifteen horses are carded, including good performers like King Lupin, Hoy, Bimctcr, and Playoff. King Lupin is greatly fancied by the Auek" land division, but his action appears to bo cramped. Northerners say he always does better in his races, but he is giving away a fair amount of weight, and this may prove his undoing. Hoy 1 have not seen, but she is reported to be fit. Bimcter galloped in taking style yostcrday morning, and must run well. <!oid"stream and Waiorewa also pleased the touts. Playoff looks fit, and will be ridden by Deeley. A penalty of Tibs brings his impost up to 8.4.' None ui the lightweights have shown to advantage on the tracks at Wanganni, and (he winner may come from above, l'layoil', Bimeter, and King Lupin will be 'well backed. *

Tli« Hack .Steeple (two miles) Ims not attracted a very "classy'' lot, but Soporific, Nita, and (ircy Konown have liad most experience over tiie country. Nita went twice round the big fences yesterday, and jumped well. Then conies the Wanganui Steeple (three miles). Uorando's trouble puts him out of the game for keeps, and that leaves ten in. Jackman won last year with !Ul, and 11.12 should anchor "him to-day. The Pole may have a chance if he gets round, but he has a bad habit of refusing bush fences, and this class predominate at Wanganui. In addition they take some jumping. Addnought (lli.C) is in line condition, and looks like being favorite todav. He nun the Onchunga .Steeple (three miles) with 11.13 up in (I.lß—a fact that should not be overlooked. Bonny is badly treated, and .Sandy Paul lias to be 'taken, on trust for the steeplechase. Daylight Bill is galloping and jumping well, and if the pace is not too torrid in the early stages he will trouble the best. Leapuki is an uncertain fencer, and nearly killed Wallace Young at Fcilding last week. Appin and Vestal both have friends, Aucklanders giving the latter a great chance. Addnought and Daylight Bill may give punters a good run for their money.

If Birkful starts in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles (one and threequarter miles) lie wiil be a very warm order. In his absence St. Gate and Toreador may carry the coin.

The Century Hurdles should bring out a great Jield. Practically all the acceptors have arrived, and opinions seem to be very mixed as to which will lafavorite when the tote bells ring. Black Northern galhqk-ri in company with .lolie Fille, Salvia, and, Toreador, yesterday, and acquitted himself well. His jumping lias been first-class, and it only remains for MeFlynu to get him to run kindly to be "knocking at the door.'' If Birkful is started, in the bigrace he will be well backed, though the distance may not be to his liking. Hereford reads best of the others.

There seems little doubt, that. Emperador will be the public's choice in the Conolly Handicap. Gold Soult is going well, as are Bony liigg and Tinopai. Leonta and Bonny Helen galloped in company yestor.lay, but their performance was not impressive.. If Emperador tastes defeat it may be at the hands (or rather feet) of (.{old Soult, The programme concludes with the Puniii Hack Handicap. Oallupiii looks as well as anything, and his party will not hear of defeat. Maltegarde and Client may prove dangerous.

IITXT CT.UTf IJCEXSES. Per Press Association. Wellington, May 10. Representatives of the Manawatu and Woodlands (Pahiatua) Hunt Clubs waited on the 'Minister of Internal Affairs to-day. and discussed certain matters arising out of the allocation of hunt club licenses by the Totalisator Commissioners. Mr. Bell informed the deputation that the commission had found that as a rule hunt chilis held their meetings at the end of the hunting season, which usually terminated on July 31. Eor that reason it was provisionally decided that (he first year of the new arrangement should commence on August 1, so (hat all clubs would start fair. Tf. however, as the deputation pointed out, (here iVete clubs that were prepared to hold n, meeting before July 31, he was quite "willing to mai.e an exception, lint he would not Torce the club which had the lirst year's permit to race before July :Sl. If the club which had the first year chose to agree with the cdub which had the second rear that it should hold a meeting before July 31, lie had no objection'' to granting a license. He made it quite clear that he would not grant a license to any club not properly equipped.
