A Wanganui telegram states that Mr.4 ■W. G. IJ. liassctt yesterday resigned the chairmanship of tile Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard. Mr. T. 11. Battle was elected.
Captain Curwcn, formerly aide to Sir Ronald Mimro - Ferguson' (GovernorGeneral of Australia)', has been killed in action. Sister S. X. Xicell, formerly of the Xew Plymouth Hospital, and Sister Brig'ham, of tha Xew Plymouth Hospital, have been accepted for service at th« front, and leave Wellington to-morrow. Wanganui reports that ilr. J. R. McDonald, a well-known horse-owner oi Levin, dropped dead while walking with' a companion near Montoa Gardens last night. Death was attributed to heart failure. ,

Dr. R. 11. Makgill, district health officer at Auckland, will shortly bo going to tin; war. Dr. Makgill is stated to be going out independently of the New Zealand expeditionary forces. He will, it is, believed, lie attached to a special stall' of doctors proceeding from England to the western front for the purpose of investigating the effects of tU9poisonous gases being brought into usfe v by the German Army. ~.,^,
Mr. R. C. Cuniinp, wlio has been ap■jiointod manager of Alessrs A. llatriek mill Co., lld.'s branch at AYaitara, was entertained nt the Newmarket Hotel on Friday night by his commercial friends in Wanganui, .presided over by Mr. Charles Hrodie, of Levin and Co., who wished liim every success in his new sphere and presented him with a handsome marble, timepifiee, suitably inscribed. Air. Cumins was formerly connected with the Invercargill house'of Messrs J. Hattray and Sons. Noticeable among those present was a. large percentage; of "X'.T.'s" who had originally been representing Otago houses. Air.-Andrew Murray, lately of Afessva Afaekerras and llazlett, Invercargill, now manager of Afessrs llatriek and Co.'s merchandise department, was among those present and was heartily welcomed to AVanganui. A welcome guest was Quarter-master-Sergeant Fred. J. Tattle, who formerly represented Alessrs llatriek and' Co., and is now attached to the troops at Trendinin. Mr. Tattle responded very feelingly to the toast of the "Army and Mavy.*' mid .aid it was every man's diitv w!io had no ties to don a uniform and' help to keep the good old flag flying.
