OPTIMISM AND CONFIDENCE. RUSSIANS MAIvE PROGRESS. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) London, May 17. The Times' correspondent at Warsaw says that during the desperate operations on an extremely large scale the Allies must be content to wait results, placing in Russia the same faith that she lias shown in the liritisli and French during periods of uncertainty. He had talked with high officials from the front, and everywhere Was optimism and confidence. They declare that the army is better than ever before, and it is unnecessary to stress the passing phase of the situation. I'etrograd, May 17. On Saturday a comiuuniiiue stated: —■ We were obliged to fall back in the Carpathians in order to unite the Third Army on the San with the, adjacent armies. Wc took prisoner "20,0110 Au.strians, who were unable to maintain their position on the left bank of the Lh'iith, except in the Koloniea region, where they 'brought up the last reserves. A\'e carried St. Yhynadworna after a great struggle, and are now energetically pursuing the enemy. Our long-range batteries at Przemysl on Friday dispersed a column approaching from the west, inflicting heavy losses. IWe repulsed several attacks west of Shavli (near Riga) and drove back a strong coin mil at Grouzzi, which was endeavoring to envelop Shavli from the north.
