J • A successful and pleasant ffiithoriiijr, took place on Wcdm sday evening In si. at the Upper MangoTei hall, tlic occasion being the farewelling of live of our young men wlio are going to the front. The hall was simply packed, several coining from as far away as Frankley and Carrington roads. Mr. Frank Oliver performed tire duties of the chair in a most cflieicnt manner. lieing an old Maori war veteran. The first portion of the programme consisted of songs and patriotic speeches. Then followed the presentations. Mr. Wi'lic Teurce was given an inscribed wristlet watch and Mr. David Brown a silver tobacco pouch and matcli box combined, also inscribed. After "For they are .billy 'Good Fellows," bad been sung and tfiey had been cheered to the echo, supper was handed round, and. needless to say, was done full justice to. Tile floor was then made ready for dancing, and the great number who remained to dance thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Testifying to the popularity of the young -men, 'the capable M.C", the gool floor and, last but not least, the excellent --music supplied by Mrs. W. Warn, the dance was brought to a. dlo.se at 4 a.m. to the strains of "Auld Lung Syne," the National! Anthem being .the eonc'liuling item.
