INDECENT HOOKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, May 14. In the Police Court, one bookseller was lined £lO and costs, and three others £3 and costs for .selling indecent literature in a book called "Winning Post Stories." 'HALE-HOLIDAY QUESTION. Wellington, May 15. The Saturday half-holiday will commence on June 5. Tile Labor Department informs grocers that if they decide to close, on June 3 (King's Birthday) they can keep open on Saturday, making that the late night for the week. STOREKEEPER COMMITS SUICIDE. (Auckland, Last Night. A case of suicide occurred at Hawick on Saturday, a local .storekeeper named George, Joseph Sellwood, a Justice of the Peace, shooting himself through the head with a revolver. Deceased was a widower, aged fifty-eight years, and had been worried over business matters.
SPACE FOR MEAT. Timaru, May 14. A meeting of farmers convened by the chairman of the Farmers' Union tilis afternoon passed a resolution strongly protesting against the allotment of the frozen meat space to South Canterbury for July. Figures were quoted to show the continued unfairness to the South Tsland, apart from consideration of the disastrous conditions due to a bad climatic season. Only onethird of the July space was allotted to this Island. The Xort.li Island has had more in the last seven months than in the previous twelve months. There are a million carcases in South Tsland stores and a million awaiting slaughter and going back on account of the shortness of feed, Neither fodder nor roots are available as in ordinary years. The Government will he asked to interfere and see that the South Island is fairly treated.
OLD MAX BURNED TO DEATH. Duncdin. Last Night. The superintendent of police has'been advised that Thomas Taylor, an oldage pensioner, was burned to death in his hut at Opliir this morning.
