A very delightful though impromptu afternoon tea was. held at Miss Pollard's convalescent -home last Saturday, in aid of the Belgians, at which many of the ladies of New Plymouth were asked to exhihit any plain or fancy needlework they had done themselves or had in their possession. And great was the array. One could hardly realise that such talent could be found in Xew Plymouth. Why, in some cases the work was so fine and delicately done that it seemed to be beyond the power of all human hand. Then, again, there was embroidered work, done by some fair hand over a century ago, and while exclaiming over its exquisiteness I heard remarked, "Why, in those days the women had nothing else to do but sew; nothing to distract them, like we have nowadays, such as bridge, dances, theatres, why (in a most tragic voice), they even hadn't to do the ; r own cooking!" Dainty afternoon tea was served by a bevy of young girls under the broad verandah, delightful music being played all the while. Two fascinating little flower-girls.
