GERMAN OUTRAGES. . _ RETALIATION* URGED. Melbourne, May; 4. In the Senate, during a discussion ou the Lusitania outrage, several Senators urged a campaign of retaliation, including the seizure of German property. It was stated that several Mclbournt blocks are owned by German companies. (One in Collins Street belonged t/o a company in which the Kaiser is the chiel shareholder, Senator Pearce stated that steps hare been taken to control meetings of the natives and descendants of natives oJ enemy countries. In the Senate Mr. Pearce stated that be had received a cable from the Admiralty to the effect that the Turkish report of the sinking of the Australian submarine AE2 was unconfirmed.
FOR THE BELGIANS. BIG SYDNEY CARNIVAL. Received May 14, 8.15 p.m. Sydney, May 14. Belgian Day, which strong committees ■under the direction of Mr. Hugh 'Ward are organising throughout New South .Wales, was a splendid success. The weather was fine until late in the afternoon, when raiu int'rfered. .Flags were flown, and the city was given up to an army of collectors. There were street pageants and all manner ol attractions and money-making devices. Auctioneers at street corners and elsewhere were sidling and re-selling flags and large quantities of valuables donated, at fancy prices. The Government temporarily suspended the law to enable raffles to be drawn. The central function at every municipality in the State ■was the mayor reading the toast: "The restoration of Belgium; new life to om foravc allies; long live heroic Albert." At the Sydney, Town Hall, after the leading of the toast and of a message received by Mr. Hugh Ward from the King of the Belgians thanking the people of New South Wab-s for their hearty -support to the Belgian cause, an immense gathering wildly responded to Governor Strickland's call for cheers for Kin" Albert.
