WAITARA NEWS.

(From a Correspondent.)

L CHfton Hull presented a busy scene on ', Thursday afternoon, the occasion of a pupils' concert given by pupils of Mrs. , will Miss Mallow. This is the fourth I concert of the kind given during the Mast 18 months, the object being to accustom musical students to play before an audience. Visitors came from points as widely separated as New Plymouth and the "foot of Jit. Jtcscsiigcr, while Uruti, Urenili, Onaero, Waitui and Lepperton were all well represented. There were some really solid musical items on the programme, Miss B. Hirst playing the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata Apassionata, which, to the credit of the performer and the audience as well, was received wtih a round of applause. Schumann had an exponent in Miss J. Collier, who played the -well-known 'Fantasiestucke": Miss Harrison lntut>reted Grieg's "Humoresquc" and enteral into the spirit of the work, while the :oiicert-givers each contributed a classic, vlrs. Marlow Brahm's "Intermezzo" and diss Marlow "Zinlandia" (Vibellius). ilcsars N. Day and Corrie-Whyte renderd some songs in fine style, and Joan 'assau, a little lass of seven or eight ummers made her bow to the public md won the hearts of her hearers in a iradle song which she sang with a partiinlarly pure tone and correct enunciation. She w'as encored, but owing to ler youth, her teacher would only conient to her bowing hor acknowledgments, md it is to bo assumed that for some rears her appearances in public will be : ew and far between. Other items of special merit were piano solos By Miss E. Jenkins and X. Nixon (encored), and % violen solo bv Mr. B. Saleman, and a luet by Messrs' D. Tate and W. Jeffrey. There were a number of trios, in which the players kept well together, in spite !)f a little excusable nervousness. Jlisses D. Dowsett, J. Campbell (in place of Miss P. Tate, absent through illness) and Telfar were the first combine, followed by Misses J. Campbell, P. Trim and B. Andrew; Misses A. and M. Macdonald nnd G. Clare; and Misses E., \Y. and C. Knuekey. Miss A. Rumball played a pianoforte solo. Duets were played respectively by Masters W. Joll and G. C'alder; Mrs. T-uml and Mrs. Marlow; Misses M. Npiirdle and Jf. Pennington: and Misses A. and N. Bracegirdle. lA most pleasant and successful afternoon was spent, and judging from the number present, it is evident that a great deal of interest is being taken in these periodical concerts.
