EGMONT WINTER MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. The Kgmont Racing Club's winter Meeting was opened yesterday in splendid weather, and the attendance waa large. The course was in good order, though a trifle holding after the recent rains. The racing was keenly contested and reflected credit on 11 r. (leu. Horse's handicapping. Mr. 0. O'Connor controlled the starting machine, and though he had many unruly horses to deal with his send-oll's were uniformly good. Since the February meeting a number of improvements have been effected, chief of which is a new bar ami enlarged cloak-room on the inside. The stipendiaries wore Messrs McMahon and Cordon, but the running was clean throughout the day and their duties were very light. Speculation was brisk, the sum of iMo.W)] passing through the 1 machine as against CI t.'HM). IDs last year—an increase of CD'.IO Ids. The totalisator was closed promptly to time, and though much money was shut out on the first two races the public quickly fell into line and invested their money promptly. The gates .showed an increase of £IS. The music supplied bv the Lyric Orchestra (Mr. Will Hut'chens, conductor) was much enjoyed, and the catering and management of the booths was excellent. Mr. J. Bennett's invention iu the shape of a white flag attached to the starting barrier worked splendidly, and is a great aid to correct timekepiug. The innovation is one that tliouid be adopted by all racing"clubs.

The New Plymouth-trained Crown Pearl paid the largest dividend of the day, running a magnificent race und T a steadier of fist. :']]>s. His party did not benefit to any great extent over the victory. Another from the same stable, Clenroy. returned a nice dividend in the Kailway Handicap, and other Now Plymouth horses to gain place money were Ngapoto, /ion. Royal Arms, and Sylvan Dale. Sunbird's victory in the Meßac Memorial Handicap was very popular. The mare carried her (lit. in fine style, and won on her merits. The ofiicial time, 2.11. was several seconds slower than private watches made it. The racing passed oIT without accident, and was most enjoyable throughout. Results:
