POLITICAL PATRONAGE.
(To tile Editor.) Sir,—Tlm-t there has been a surfeit of political patronage existent in this Dominion since the would - be political purist party, self-styled " Reform," cozened their way on to the Treasury benches goes without saying. The latest is the Vernon Reed episode. During the general election for the Xew Plymouth sent, the Tory candidate publicly stated that the Girls' High School grant of £OOOO would lie given on 31st March (and lie advised the board to go on with the erection of the building). Have the board got it yet? Th» Petroleum Company also were promised £0001). Have they received it? The Liberal candidate referred to these promises as bribes to obtain votes. Was lie right or wrong, Mr. Editor? T do not blame Mr. Okev for any laxity, as his energy is we'l known; also his influence with the Government. It looks as if Mr. Olcev is being made a cat'spaw of. and I fully expect him to put forth his strong individuality and kick over tlie traces.—l am. etc., PRO P.OXO PUBUCO.
