CHARGE OF SPREADING RUMORS. Christchurch, Mav 11. In the court to-day VV. Sigglekow was charged with having, on May 1, at Christchurch, spread a false report stating, "The first, second and third contingent were practically wiped out. There will be a special edition at 0 o'clock," such statement being likely to prejudice recruiting. A remand till Jlay 19 was granted to allow the accused to prepare his defence. THE TROOPS IN SAMOA. Wellington, May 11. Colonel Logan advises from Samoa that the health of the troops is good. The following are in hospital:—Captain J. G. Roache, enteric fever; Sergeant R. Oliphant, lacerated finger; Corporal W. J. licasley, dengue fever; Privates 11. Morrisey, colitis; 11. T. Nelson, mentis; G. T. Robertson, tonsilitis; T. G. Risk, dengue fever. All are doing well. FOES IN DUNEDIN. Dunciin, May 11. Close on 100 citizens waited on the Mayor this morning to urge that a public meeting bo called to discuss the question of the treatment and restriction ol non-naturalised enemy subjects who might be regarded as potential foes. Tim Ma\|or agreed to call the meeting.

MECHANICS FOR BRITAIN. Wellington, May 11. The Hon. James Allen, told a Post reporter to-day that he had received many applications, and hoped still to continue to receive them, from mechanics anxious to go Home, lie had cabled the Home authorities twice, asking if the) would accept the services of these men, but was still awaiting a reply.

FINE RECRUITING IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, Last Night. Seventy-seven volunteers, the biggest lot in any one day since the war expeditionary force was despatched, presented themselves for examination at the Drill Hall to-day. Of this number 55 were passed by the doctor. MONEY FOR THE RED CROSS. Danncvirkc, May 11. At a meeting last evening to stimulate recruiting and devise means of providing soldiers from the district with comfort s , a Red Cross fund was established, £3OO being subscribed in the room. This was beaded by a gift of £IOO by Mr. G. Hunter, M,P.
