The Kaiser, who recently referred to "our old ally, Cod," has now been speaking in Poland of "our old rit and "my friend, Luther." It is odd that a man with so many friends in another sphere should have, so few friends oil earth. At the Clifton County Council meeting on Friday an appreciation of the work with thi! small grader of Mr. C. foreman was received from Mr. T. McKenzic, on behalf of the settlers on Allen road. Several members expressed pleasure and also surprise, at receiving such ii communication, remarking that the majority of letters received by the Council Were of the reverse nature.
The following have been appointed chairmen of the various committees of the New Plymouth 'Borough Council: Works, Councillors Smith; finance, the 'Mayor; abattoirs, Councillor Mannix; reserves, Councillor Collis; baths and hand, Councillor Sykes; electric light, Councillor 'Montenth; tramways, Councillor Burgess; estimates, the' Mayor.
During the. past month ,131 cows, 27 bullocks, 13 calves, 501 sheep, 135 lambs, and 145 pigs were slaughtered for local consumption at the Municipal Abattoir. Compared with the corresponding period of last year, the figures siiow an increase of 'l3* pigs and a decrease of 31' cattle, 0 calves, 101 sheep, luid 22 lambs. One cow, two bullocks, one sheep, and 5 pigs were condemned.
On Saturday the New 'Plymouth East I'lying Club held a race from 'Marton, a distance of 104 miles. The weather was fine, and good times were recorded. All the members competed, and the results were:—F. James's "Castor Oil," .'inr22min, 1; It. J. M:ovcrles''s "Torpedo," 3hr 22m in 25scc, 2; W. Bcal's "Laura," 3hr 27 mill, 3; \V. Roch, 3hr Shnin, 4.
At the Salvation Army Hall yesterday, the services were conducted by Brigadier Hoaro, from Wellington, and the dav's gatherings were announced as " Mother's Day," when in all the gatherings special reference was made ~to. t(ie mother's influence' and to her duty to the young. The platform was decorated with white flowers, and the Army members each wore a white llowcr in memory of mother. To-night Mr. Bramwel'l Iloare, who was oik; of the Expeditionary Force to go to Samoa, ami who has just returned, will give an address on Samoa, and also show,a number of curios from that interesting island. Messrs Harry iPlimmer and Winter Hall, heads of the Patriotic Comedy Company, -which has just concluded a tour of the North Island, urrived back in Wellington on Thursday. When they arrived, the Prime Minister (Hon. W. .Massev) -was not in town,' and as they had little time to spare Inter-in the day, they posted him a cheque for £1501), accompanied by the following letter:— Right Hon. the Prime .Minister, Wellington.—Dear llr. Massey.—We write enclosing a cheque for £ISOO, being the first instalment of the profits of the tour in aid of the Belgian Fund. —Yours faithfully, Harry Plimmer, Winter Hall."
