CO-OPERATIVE FREEZING WORKS. Tin' movement that was initiated with a view to providing freezing works in North Taranaki owned directly by the producers should have received the whole-hearted support of the farmers and graziers throughout the large district it was intended to serve. Meetings have heen held throughout the district and the project has been Welcomed with every show of satisfaction by those who have attended, but the practical response as represented by the applications for shares has fallen so far short of what is requisite that at a meeting held at Inglewood yesterday to decide on future action it was deemed advisable to adjourn for a fortnight in order to give the delegates an opportunity to make a special canvass so that the minimum amount of shares should be placed and thus enable the movement to tal:e definite shape. It is diflicult to underhand why this step should have become Jieee.-i.sary. There is a general feeling that the freezing works are necessary for the welfare of the producers, and why they have not come forward to support the enterprise is a problem they alone can solve. One thing is certain, and that is, if the present movement is allowed to fall through for lack of financial backing it will be a set-back that the fanners will bitterly repent ef in days to cum'.'. This want of suppoit seems all the more 'inexplicable in face of tl::-.splendid season and prices obtained. The opportunity for embarking- on such a necessary adjunct to their business was most fittingly timed. Possibly many of the farmers may have thought, (hat if they look up one or two shares t won'd suffice. They will now know that their biddings should be larger, and it will be a blot on the otherwise progressive spirit of the district if the required number of shares is not at once applied for. As it is proposed to call up only .C:l a share, the payments being spread over a year and a half, there should be no dillicutty in the minimum shares being taken up—and more. The farmers should make it a point of honor to see the thing through, and it is to be hoped they will do so at once and with a will indicative of flieir faith in the district and in an enterprise tiiat ;mist put pounds directly into their pockets.
