HOME FROM BATTLE.
FIGHTING NEAR SUEZ CANAL. COLONIALS WIIO SAW IT. (By Wire. —Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. Tlie returned troops include some men who saw the lighting at the Suez Canal. They are ready to admit that what 'happened when the Turks made the first attempt to 'cross was little more than a skirmish, though it cost the enemy many lives. " The New Zealand troops were well entrenched close to the edge of the canal." saiil one man, " and the Turks who had a few German oliicers with them made a rush. Tlie shooting was at point-blank range, and witii our chaps blazing away and the warships taking a part the Turks never had a chance. We had to bury a lot of them. I heard that when the body of a German officer was searched a fairly large sum of money in gold was found on it, as well as some other interesting things. I do not. know what happened to the money. Our fellows expected to get some real fighting later on and now they have, got it.''
