FARMERS' FREEZING WORKS.

MKETIXG AT CAUDIFF, ', ; A meeting of settlers in connection with the proposed Fanners' Co-opera-tive l'leezing Works scheme was held at Cardiff on Tuesday evening, Mr. Win. Uit-luuds occupying Uc chair. Mr. A. Morton, Ingle wood; Mr. F W Webster, Stratford, and .Mr. E. Marfell, toko, were, also present. The chairman explained pretty fully the scheme as already outlined and said lie considered the erection of freezing works a most worthy object for the settlers to undertake, but to ensure success the farmers must stand loyally together. •So far as he was concerned,'he was determined to give the matter support. Mr A. Morton urged upon farmers the. desirability of erecting works as proposed. It was undoubted that such an undertaking would be to the greatest advantage of all farmers in the district. The existing freezing works in laranaki had before last season increased their freezing space considerably, but tins extra aocoinmodation md been occupied largely by stock brought from outside our Wn district, while there was plenty of local stock available, which could not be accomlnodatd. . Mr. Morton appealed to farmers to go forward at this juncture m their own interests, and pointed out most clearly why the works should bo established.

Mr Marfell also spoke, going fully into the whole question, and pointing out why it was ho advantageous to settlers at this time to have' freezing works of their own. If thev did not, each year they would find themselves up against the same argument—i.e., want of space. A few years ago the objection was that Taranaki could not produce sullieient fat stock to warrant such nn important undertaking on the part of the settlers, but the continued opening up of the back country, and the better farming which was evident on nl hands, had quite dispelled that idea. All the speakers were well received, and nil those present added their names to the list of those desiring to take up shares.—Stratford Tost.
