EGMONT WINTER MEETING. ACCEPTANCES TO-NIGHT. A final reminder is given to racehorse owners and trainers that acceptances for first day's events to be decided ;it the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting close tonight at i) p.m. The entries for the meeting were excellent, and there is every reason to expect that -Mr. .1. Turton will receive good acceptances this evening. The course and appointments are in fine order, reflecting great credit on the club's painstaking caretaker, Mr. 'A. Morse, and there should he some fine racing there next week. The Hawera telegraph office closes at S p.m.

THOSE TOTE PERMITS! The report of the Totalisator Commission, published in yesterday's News, would bo read with considerable interest, and from a Taranaki point of view the finding of the gentlemen selected to consider applications for totalisator permits is very satisfactory. The only Taranaki racing club concerned was the Waitara B.C. Club, and it was not expected that that body would obtain a permit. That more deserving clubs like Ashurst, Taumarunui, and Pahiatua obtained Jjcenscs is a matter for congratulation. In trotting circles there will be joy at the success of the Waimate Plains Trotting Club in obtaining whit the News has always urged as their (and Taranaki's) due. This province produces some of the best trotting horso3 in the Dominion, and singularly enough has not been favored in reec.it years with that very necessary adjunct to a race meeting—a totalisator permit. Those interested in this branch of sport in Taranaki have never ceased agitating for their rights, and the News has done its share too. That the end has been achieved is certainly "good business." However fearless the Commissioners' work has been as regards galloping and trotting, their weak-kneed action as regards the allocation of licenses to hunt club 3 is bound to come in for almost general condemnation. The claims of no less than sixteen hunt clubs were considered to be equal, and, as eight permits were Quotable, they slipped out of the difficulty—to their own way of thinking—by giving each club a permit every second year. It is hard to imagine the merits of sixteen clubs being equally good Perhaps the Commissioners worked on the- principal that their claims were equally bad! However, the North Taranaki Hrmt Club and the EgmontWanganui Hunt Clnb are amongst the favored ones, so Taranaki will not complain. At least tfeere will be few grumblers at this eadi af the province. How much better it would be for the two clubs under notice to amalgamate and hold an annual meeting-, say at Hawera.
