The acting-town e'ork (Mr. Holden) read the returning officer's report of the result of the Mayoral election, and Mr. J. E. Wilson, Mayor-elect, made the usual statutory declaration of oliicc which was attested by Cr. Collis. Cr. Collis, on behalf of the Council, congratulated Mr. Wilson on his election. He anticipated a strenuous time, hut promised the co-operation of councillors. He was confident that the future of New Plymouth was not so (lark as some people would have them think, The Mayor, in returning thanks, said the work before the Council for the coming year was of a very important character. He was therefore particularly glad to have the co-operation of such an excellent body of business men as the present councillors, many of whom had previous experience of borough administration, while those who had not might he relied upon to do good work on the Council. He felt sure that he would lieceive the co-operation of all the Council, but he would like the Councillors to understand that the business in open Council would be conducted on business lines in strict conformity with standing orders and by-laws which would be enforced. By rom.pliaiKc with those ordinances he thought the Council would get through its work quicker and better. He would not, in the exercise of his powers, stifle discussion, and all proper information available would be furnished., but councilors should understand that they would only lie allowed to speak once in debates. Ho concluded by thanking the councillors for their expressions of congratulations and assistance. (Applause).
