At a recent meeting of the committee of the Asliburton County Racing Club, when a sum of 100 guineas was being voted us a further contribution towards the Belgian Relief Fund, Mr. Hugo Friedlandcr objected to the sum being, voted on the ground that by the rules the club had no power to" do special business of that nature without a special notice of motion being first given. The sequel was that during the recent Lvttclton Harbor Board elections campaign, Mr. Friedluuder referred to the matter nnd contended thai the course lie had adopted at the Racing Club Committee meeting was correct, and that the rules of the club were against special business of that nature being dealt with without notice of motion first having been given. Subsequently Mr. E. J. V. i.ingg wrote a letter to the local paper defending the club's action. Mr. Friedlander replied to the effect that his own contention was the correct one, and isi.ued a challenge to Mr. tlrigg of £IOOO to .tloil, the loser to pay over his nmount of his wager to the Belgian Kelief Fund. Mr. Oigg has taken up the challenge, and ha» lodged his cheque for £IOO with the Ashburton "'Guardian.''
