The advisability of instituting a new system m regard to the disposal of 'Autkljind city refuse was mooted bv tlic Mayor (.Mr. C. J. Parr), in an address last week. He spoke of a patent machine which v„is being used successfully in England, and which, by m«aus of the application of centrifugal force converted the refuse into a kind of black mould, which, whilst c|mte innocuous, made an excellent fertiliser, for which a ready sat' was found. The city engineer (Mr. Hush) had been looking into the miitter, and be had sufficient confidence in it to advocate a trial of it instead of building a second destructor. These machines, which co«t about £BOO each, could be installed in different parts of the city, ami they seemed to afford a means of getting rid of the smoke from present destructors, as well u» effecting a great saving in cartage.
