'■A•Traveller" writes: "I have just returned from a tour of New Zealand, and 1 must say that I have never come aero* so many young fellows loitering about, evidently with little or no interest in life, every one of whom should either be at the front or Trentham. Their presence in the streets of New Plymouth at nights is about the most conclusive argument there, could be in favor of conscription. Obviously patriotism or duty lias no place in their composition." The splendid loyalty of the Maoris to the. Empire during the present great struggle was further evidenced at a great gathering of natives held at -Manakau, near Levin, last week. Hitherto the natives have assisted the various funds materially by raising money and by generous gifts on dili'erent occasions. Last week's meeting was large and extmncly enthusiastic, and, after many fine orations by chiefs and others, it was decided to form a separate Maori Fund, to whcih Maoris throughout the Dominion will be asked to contribute. It is confidently anticipated that a considerable amount of money will result from this action.
