EDUCATION DISTRICTS COMMISSION.
SOUTHLAND EVIDENCE. Invercargill, April SO. The Education Districts Commission commenced talcing evidence in Invercargill to-day. Resolutions from practically every school committee in the district urging the retention of the Southland education district were, received. The evidence consisted of an official statement from the Southland Board, arguing that the district should be retained, on the ground of eflicienoy and economy, and statements by Messrs John Fisher (ex-chairman of the Board), J. Crosby Smith (ex-meribcr of the Board), Dr. Ifan-en (director of the Technical College), Inspector Wyiie, J. T. Stevens find J. Jlactiibbou (members of the Board). It was evident from the trend of questions put to witnesses thai, tiie members of the. Commission held the view that & larger district made for efficiency, as a greater field of opportunity attracted ambitious teachers. This suggestion was met by witnesses, who contended that the standards of efficiency were set, and were complied with as satisfactorily in Southland as elsewhere.
The Commission will leave for Dunedin to-morrow, taking evidence there on Monday.
