THE HURRICANE AT NIUE.
DETAILS TO HAND. By Telegraph.---Press Association. Auckland Lust Night. The ketch Kereru, which arrived from Nine last night, brings the iirst news of the effects of the January hurricaneupon that island. The gale blew down several thousand coeoanut trees, and destroyed most of the bananas and breadfruit. The mission church at Miltalau had its roof blown off, and some hundreds of native huts were destroyed or damaged. Two other churches suffered injury, but the Government buildings escaped. Subsequently, however, the trees flowered freely and there were indications of a general recovery when the Kereru left. On her way down the. ketch encountered some particularly bad weather, and when about 150 miles from Sunday Island she was shipping a lot of water over her bows. About seven tons of copra, stowed on the decks, were washed overboard, but no other damage was done. Notwithstanding, the Kereru made the round trip in thirty days, one day better than her previous record.
