THE.DEADLY TORPEDO. FRENCH OFFICERS' HEROISM. Received April 30, 11 p.m. Rome, April 30. It was calm and moonlight when the vessel was torpedoed. The first torpedo wrecked the French armored cruiser Leon Gambetta's water-tight compartments. The officers made no effort to escape, but assembled on the bridge and shouted "Vive la France!" as the vessel was engulfed.
