ALLEGED BETTING. By Telegraph .—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. In the Police Court to-day, before Mr. Widdowson, S.M., Frederick Matthews was charged with being a bookmaker and he did bet on licensed premises. The evidence for the police was that on March 25th, the second day of the Southland races, defendant and a man named Daniel McLaren, who was described as a bookmaker, were in the Grand Hotel. Defendant said to McLaron, "Ten shillings on ——." The police did not catch the name of the horse, but saw McLaren writing Russo in a book. The police contended that Matthews was the principal in the matter, and was therefore liable as a bookmaker. Mr. Hunlou, for defendant, suggested an adjournment in order to look into the point raised, as the view expressed by this police was new to him. He contended defendant was not a bookmaker. The case was adjourned sine die to en&bla the question to be investigated.
