Mr. R. L. Mcllroy has been nominated l>y the Taranaki Teachers' Institute as non-official member of the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute. 'Mr, Wylie leaves New Plymouth on Monday next, sailing for Australia ( towards the end of this wdek, in company with the other members of the New Zealand Medical Corps that has been accepted by the Home Government, Dr. Mcliovern, of Wellington, will be in charge, and Mr. Wylie second in command. It is expected that the corjNl will leave Australia for the Mediterranean in about three weekis time. At the' meeting in the Town Hall last night the Mayor (Mr. J. E. Wilson) said it was probable that Mr. C. Skitrop, the borough engineer, would be resigning his position shortly. He referred to the matter because, he saijl, it was likely that Mr. Skitro-p would not be in charge of the new road works. The matter was still in abeyance, but he would go as far as to say that it was probable that Mr. Skitrop would resign his'position before the new rest'. works were put in hand. Says the Hawera Star:—A good many people in this district, especially residents of Kapouga, \yhere Dr. Maelagan practised, will be interested in the following paragraph taken from the Guardian newspaper: The Rev. D. W. Maclagan, a nephew of the late Archbishop of York, Curate-in-Charge of St. Paul's Glass Houghton, in the Parish of Castle-. ford, Yorkshire, for the past two years, has announced his resignation. Before taking Holy Orders, Mr. Maelagan, who is a member of the College of Physicians, Edinburgh, Ifad a medical practice In New Zealand for eight years. In informing liia congregation of his decision, he said that hist call to God came to liiiu from New Zealand, and he now felt a very definite call, which he could not resist, to return to the colony. !At a luncheon tendered to the staff of the Daily News by the proprietor yesterday, a presentation was made to Mr. J, J. Staples, who is leaving for Chiistchurch to take up the position of South Tslanil representative of MeLeod and Slade, Ltd. The presentation, which took the form of a travelling bag together with a piece of plate appropriately inscribed, was made by Mr. T. C List on behalf of the staff, and was accompanied by expressions of high appreciation of thi' manner in which Mr. Staples had performed his duties while on the staff of the paper. The gifts wire, suitably acknowledged. The proprietor was warmly congratulated on the signal success that had attended his efforts to make the Daily News what it is. In reply the staff were thanked for their co-operation, and the gathering dispersed after giving throw hearty cheers for Mr. List.
