■THE EMPIRE THEATRE. The feature film in tlie new programme introduced at the Empire Theatre on Saturday night is a Domino drama entitled "The 'Battle of the Sexes," teaching the moral that the law of ethics which governs a woman's life necessarily governs a man's life as well. Frank • Aiulilews, a successful business man, I who has always found happiness in his] own home, suddenly finds himself enthralled by the advances of a gay young I woman! who lives in the same apart- I ment house. This results in his wire nearly losing her mental balance, and tlu> daughter, crazed by the grief of her mother, determines to bring the affair !to an end. With revolver in. lmnd, she ' enters the apartments of the young wo- ' man, but fails to carry out her mission, i The denouement arrives when Andrews finds the sweetheart of the v.w.an making love to his daughter. He reforms, and re-establishes tlie happy relations that had previously existed in liir, own home. The supporting items on the new bill include an amusing comedy,"Taken by Storm." by the famous Vitagraph Company. This deals with the love affairs of an impetuous) mountain lad, who forces his sweetheart to an early i marriage, and almost immediately feds I that he lias been cruel to her. lie then resolves never to see lier again until she comes to him of her own accord. This she eventually does, but not until many humourous situations have arisen. Another good comedy is the Osteon Company's "Absent minded Cupid," which tells how a girl clerk in a book store was loved by -two of the other clerks, Ernest and George, of the jealous rivalry, that existed between the two men, and what came of it all. Latest news from the theatres of war is shown in a topical gazette, and, the programme is completed by a delightful Norwegian senic, "From Christianna to Bergen." Mrs. George provides capital music during the evening.
MR. JOSEPH BLASCHECK AND MISS ALYCE AUSTIN. Mr. Joseph Blascheck, who is making a final tour before returning to London, will visit us next Wednesday and will be supported in his entertainment of humor and music by Miss Alyee Austin, a young lady of considerable musical talent. She is a native of Ballarat, Victoria, and, after studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under Professor Marshall Hall, she gained the highest diploma' of the Trinity College of Music, London (L.T.C.L.). She has already attained her L.A.B. and A.T.C.L., and was the youngest, in the State of Victoria to hold these diplomas. Miss Austin possesses an exceptionally clear and brilliant soprano voice, and in her lighter work has gained considerable reputation as an entertainer with a distinct style of her own. She is an accomplished pianist and a perfect accompanist. In the musical sketches and humorous duets which she performs with Mr. Blascheck she displays a sense of humor and histrionic ability of a high order, and quickly establishes herself as a favorite, with her audiences.. The box plan is now open at Hoffmann's, where 2s and Is day sale tickets can also be purchased, a special concession being advertised for students and school parties of six or over.
