WAR NOTES.
♦ In a letter published in the Southland Times a Southland trooper in Egypt writes: All the Bconting was done by aeroplane or by the Hyderabad Lancers. The former created quite a stir in the camp the first time it - was seen coming towards the camp. Immediately all the bivouacß and sun shelters were vacated, and all eyes were turned upwards to catch a glimpse of the latest arm of the forces. The plane used for seoutitig was a biplane with the propeller in the rear, while the pilot and obsenvr were seated, in the front. All our planes had a distinguishing mark by which they were ' known to our troops. It was by this means that most accurate information regarding the enemy's movements, etc., was received. Tims while any movements of the enemy were known to our staff the enemy were unable to ascertain with any degree of certainty the dispos-. al and strength of our troops. The Hyderabad Lancers did very good service, and they are a particularly line body of men, lent to the British Government by the Bajah of Hyderabad. They are part of that ruler's standing nrmyj and, although trained by British officers, are not under the control of the Imperial authorities when at Home. It is rather a coincidence that their commander, Colonel Andrews, should be a Now Zealand<t. Ho was born in Christehureh and was some years ago through New Zealand lecturing on military matters. The patrols of this body went out in the 1 early morning and did not return until ; evening. One of these patrols failed to' i reach camp during an attack, but man- ' aged to elude tlicTVk;- end retvrn when ■ , the latter had Retired in the morning.
