The report of the Compt'rollcr-(ieneral of Police for 1(114 shows that, excluding inebriates, 12,485 convicted and unconvicted persons were received in, the State gaols, including 2185 feiiinlea, a# increase of 032 compared! with J913. The percentage per 10(1,000 of population was (ill!), as compared with 070 in 1904. He emphasises the fact that few tradesmen wore received in the gaols, possibly indicating that inability to obtain" and keep remunerative employment is a potent .factor and cause of 'crime. /
