Replying to the statement made' by the secretary of the Foodstuffs Commission that the Commission had never had before it evidence of the exploitation, Mr. Andrew Fairbaim, a merchant, informed a. Star reporter that he had gone before the Commission and produced original documents to show that tinvery day war was declared prices of foodstuffs had been advanced from ten to ninety per cent, on goods which carried no increased cost whatsoever. He also gave evidence proving that if his firm had raised prices to the same extent vx his competitors his additional profits on one month's trading would have amounted to at least five thousand pounds. His firm had never charged these excessive prices, and yet its prolita, selling under normal conditions since the commencement of the war, were at least equal to those of previous years. He liiul made frequent application to the Commission for a copy of his evidence, but was unable to obtain it.
