ELTHAM NEWS.

MUNICIPAL MATTERS. (South Tarannki Correspondent.) Interest in municipal affairs is increasing with the approach of the election, the nominations for which close on Wed-; nesday. Mr. T. B. Crump is not again offering his services for the mayoralty, but there is to bo an election, there being two candidates in the 'field. The first nominated was Mr, Geo. H. Buckeridire, who has served his apprenticeship on the council, having been a member for some years. The other is Mr. Bra'dshuw Hive, one time member of Parliamentfor Egmont, arid one of the earlier members of the Eltham Borough Council, homing his seat for several years. Both these gentlemen have a large body of supporters, and a keen contest is confidently anticipated. For the council several names are mentioned as-candidates, and the old members, Messrs L. Hill, M. A. Whiteford, F. Amoore, J. Ballantine, and G. W. Tayler are again offering their services. On Monday afternoon Mr. 'W. J. Tristram, for several years town e'efk, announced his candidature, "■"'' other gentlemen state'd to be offering their services lire Messrs L. N. Fairhall, H. Gubb, V. J. Leathern, T. King, and Ira J. Bridger. Three members who have served for the past term are retiring, viz., Messrs J. Maxwell, H. A. "Nuttall, and J. P. Phillips.

Mr. John Heslop, who returned from; his trip to England last week-end, in- : formed a Daily News reporter that he spent a thoroughly enjoyable time in the Old Country; in fact, the whole trip proved Very pleasant. He visited Egypt on the return journey, and there saw several Eltham boys. They were all looking wonderfully well and gave him a great reception, he being the first New Zealand civilian to visit them. A number of them were under 'fire-at/the engagement on the Suez Canal, and it had only given them greater zeei to get to the front, their' baptism of lire having only served to make them keener. "1 am perfectly certain they -will acquit themselves with great credit in the future," said' Mr. Heslop. "Colonel Malone, with whom Iliad a chat, expressed himself as exceedingly pleased with the men. And," he added,"! must mention that 'I never saw 'Charlie' Ford looking so well."

Local football;prospects arc good this season. The new Rugby Club, which; has a large membership, intends running a junior and a third team, unless a senior and first junior can be arranged, which seems rather difficult.

Mr. Frank Farrell, of Eltham, has an advertisement .on :page 7 that is of great interest to sporting men. Every description of sports goods in stock.
