WAITARA HARBOR LOAN.
TIIIS DELEGATES AT TARATA. Messrs J. Jfino (chairman), Ogle, Vaughan, and McKenzie, members of this Harbor Hoard, and Captain Thompson, harbormaster, visited 'farata on Thursday evening for the purpose of placing details of the Board's unwovement proposals before the ratepa'vers. Owing to the poor attendance an informal meeting was held in a room kindly placed at the Board's disposal by Mr. Patterson, and the various points were discussed by those present. In reply to Mr. Sander, the Board's chairman said it was absolutely impossible to borrow without the security ol a rate.
•Air, M. Standish inquired as to fie boundaries and valuation of the district. The map of the district was produced, showing an area very greatly in oxross_pf wlikt was generally snnnosed. In reply to Mr. Patterson, the harbormaster (Captain Thompson) gave average depths at present on the ;bar at high and low water. 'Replying to further questioning, Mr. Ogle said that Messrs Borthwick and SonV faith in the possibilities of the port was proved by, t l ie fact of their just purchasing and placing in commission two new lighters at a cost of about £3OOO.
A -very pleasant evening was spent, and after receiving the thanks of the settlers the members left at aliout 10 p.m.
