CALIFORNIA THISTLE.
NOT GREATLY FEARED. By Telegraph.—Press Associatioa Tailmpe, Last Night. A largely attended meeting of farmedk representing the district from Kan,;;. wahia to Kaetihi to-day discussed ll'ie California)! thistle question. All present were agreed as to the necessity fin the removal of the present restriction;. .Discussion centred round the question of either its entire removal from the Vet or its transfer to the third schedule, thus giving each local body control, F:v.:hold farmers of long standing were emphatic in asserting that Californiaii thistle was not a pest to be feared, ami stated their intention to refuse to cut it in future. Others spoke of the advantage us feed last dry season. It -vna stated that, contrary to expectations, seed carried by wind did not germinate like Scotch thistles, and that spreading was due to the root system, which was stimulated by cutting. Experience in this district was that the weed was fast disappearing. Where there was once a thick growth, owing to its inability to resist the strong grass growth. Evcninally the following resolution was unanimously adopted: "Thfct this renresentative meeting of settlers from Kangiwahia to Kaetihi unanimously declare that after some years of experience, we consider Colifornian thistle should be transferred from the. second to third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act." A strong deputation was appointed to wait on the Minister of Agriculture in support of the resolution.
